NDIS & People with Disabilities
“If you want to speak about somebody at a table, then they need a seat at that table.”
NDIS needs to be:
We need to support people with disabilities who are able to work to get into the workforce. We need to provide funding streams, investment initiatives and training programs to build community capacity to engage with people with disabilities as support providers, employees, employers, colleagues, students, artists and entertainers, researchers, academics and all other fields of human endeavour. Work from home options should also be provided to people with disabilities.
Those who are not in a position to participate in the workforce need to be allowed and supported to live their best lives. We need to consult with those people and their loved ones, carers and professionals to ensure they are able to receive the most appropriate support, resources, training and education.
We need to make the system easier to navigate and more accessible for all. We also need to include more people with disabilities in the decision-making process about NDIS and disability support. Community consultation is key to improving the NDIS.
All government buildings, public offices, education facilities and public spaces such as playgrounds need to be accessible and accommodating to a very wide variety of disabilities, spanning all the senses, all aspects of mobility and all aspects of sensory and cognitive function. We have to stop thinking of disability in purely physical terms.
The Disability Support Pension needs to be restored and available to a wide range of disabilities. DSP Recipients should not have their income affected due to their partner’s income.
NDIS needs to be:
- Fully funded
- Demand driven
- Guaranteed
- Efficiently implemented
