I will fight for integrity, transparency and accountability in politics. It’s time to stamp out corruption and dishonesty, to support a strong and healthy democracy.
This is my 4 point plan to bring integrity, transparency and accountability to parliament:
1. Greater Financial Responsibility
Taxpayer money should be spent responsibly and transparently. Deb will work to stop pork-barrelling and make sure Monash gets its fair share by:
- Ensuring efficient and targeted spending of public funds.
- Increasing scrutiny in awarding government contracts and grants.
2. Real Accountability for Politicians
Deb will champion tougher standards and stronger oversight to restore trust in politics, by:
- Strengthening the National Anti-Corruption Commission.
- Introducing real-time disclosure of political donations - Deb is leading by example by making all donations public as they are made.
- Toughening laws to reveal secret meetings between lobbyists and politicians that result in the disproportionate influence of some interests on government policies.
- Outlawing misleading advertising during election campaigns
- Protecting whistleblowers
- Using Citizens’ Assemblies for key decisions.
3. Increased Media Diversity
A healthy democracy needs a diverse and responsible media. Deb will support greater diversity in media ownership.
4. Higher Standards in Parliament
Politicians should lead by example. Deb will push to strengthen the Parliamentary Code of Conduct and demand better behaviour from all members of parliament.
