David Pocock - Independent Senator (ACT)

David Pocock is an Independent Senator for the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), elected in 2022. Before entering politics, Pocock was a professional rugby union player, known for his role as vice-captain of the Brumbies in Super Rugby. Born on April 23, 1988, in Messina, South Africa, and raised in Zimbabwe, he moved to Australia as a teenager. Pocock has a strong focus on community engagement, integrity, and environmental conservation and aims to address issues such as cost-of-living, housing affordability and climate action

  • Introduced the “Duty of Care Bill” to require that politicians and policy makers have a duty of care to young people and future generations.
  • Strengthened Aged Care Bill to provide better care for older Australians
  • Championed the establishment of a federal integrity commission to combat corruption.
  • Strong advocate for housing affordability, and social equity issues.
  • Climate Change (Consequential Amendments) Bill 2022: moved amendments to this bill, co-sponsored by Senators Jacqui Lambie and Tammy Tyrrell, focusing on climate risk assessments and public consultation.
  • Climate Change Amendment (Duty of Care and Intergenerational Equity) Bill 2023: this bill sought to legislate a duty of care, requiring policymakers to consider the impact of climate harm on young people and future generations - unfortunately a Senate committee review recommended that the bill not be passed.
