Bring down the cost-of-living

Families across Monash are struggling with rising costs of groceries, energy bills, and essential services. We need immediate action to make life more affordable.

This practical plan to address cost of living pressures for everyone in Monash while building a stronger, more resilient local economy.

1. Bring down supermarket prices

I will fight to reduce grocery costs by:

  • Breaking up the supermarket duopoly and cracking down on price gouging, while ensuring farmers receive fair prices for their produce
  • Advocating for the establishment of a Supermarket Ombudsman with:
    • real powers to investigate and issue infringements for breaches of the Food and Grocery Code of Conduct; and
    • the ability to accept complaints directly from consumers and suppliers and be able to take quick and effective action to act on these complaints
  • Implementing stronger penalties for anti-competitive practices
  • Removing unnecessary aesthetic standards for fresh produce to increase supply
  • Greater support for food banks, local social enterprises and farmers' cooperatives
  • Maintaining strong local supply chains to ensure competitive prices

2. Reduce Household Bills

I will work to lower everyday costs by:

  • Making housing more affordable (see Affordable Housing Policy )
  • Expanding solar and battery subsidies for homes and businesses to reduce the cost of electricity
  • Supporting community battery projects to lower costs and protect against power outages
  • Investigating insurance industry practices to ensure affordable coverage

3. Support those in need

I will make sure no one in our community gets left behind. I will advocate for:

  • Increased income support for vulnerable community members to ensure people can live with dignity
  • Protection of essential public services including Centrelink
