The "Voices" campaign in Australia gives us a wave to ride that Independents have not had before.
In 2013, a community group of socially-conscious like-minded individuals created the Voices for Indi movement, a grassroots campaign that saw Independent Cathy McGowan claim victory, against the odds, unseating the previously safe and long standing Coalition member. Since then, “Voices for’ groups have emerged all over Australia, powered by community members that are disillusioned with two-party politics, and want to have a better say in who represents them.
Voices for Monash formed in 2021, aimed at building active community participation in politics, and supporting an independent candidate that will represent the electorate. Voices for Monash is one of many Community Independents groups springing up around the country as part of a backlash against party politics and MPs whose allegiances are first and foremost to their parties, rather than the people of their electorates. The two-party system is failing democracy in Australia. An informed and growing cross-bench could see more legislation being passed that is for the good of the nation and democracy, rather than party political self-interest.
Voices for Monash have chosen to support Deb Leonard in her campaign to be elected to Federal Parliament in 2022.
The Voices for Monash community will continue to consult with the candidate on the needs and values of the community. If successful, this relationship of consultation will continue to keep our Independent MP up-to-date on needs and views of the Monash electorate and act as a communication conduit.
